AOA Children's Educational Materials Features New Animated Characters

Wise Eyes™ and Spex™ teach children to “Be Wise About Your Eyes”

ST. LOUIS, January 6, 2006—“Be Wise About Your Eyes”, a new educational program targeted to children in kindergarten through third grade, has been introduced by the American Optometric Association (AOA). The program, which teaches children about how the visual system works, the importance of regular eye exams, and how to protect the eyes, includes a twelve-and-a-half minute live action and animated video, as well as a 16-page coloring and activity book.

The video debuts two new animated stars, Wise Eyes™ the owl, and Spex™, a young boy who wears glasses.

The coloring and activity book includes a variety of age-appropriate activities to reinforce the concepts presented in the program. The “Be Wise About Your Eyes” book was developed through a grant from Optos, Inc., the provider of the Optomap® Retinal Exam, now used in more than 2,000 primary eye care practices in North America.

“We are excited to introduce children to Wise Eyes™ and Spex™, and to provide our members with high-quality, updated tools for use in their communities,” said Richard L. Wallingford, Jr., O.D., President of the AOA. “Members are encouraged to use the video and activity books during classroom visits, with local elementary schools, health fairs, and other community presentations.”

Ophthalmic Council participant Optos is pleased to make the coloring and activity book a part of AOA’s outreach to children and their parents. “Building awareness about the importance of pediatric eye care directly aligns with the history of the Optomap Retinal Exam,” said Ian Stevens, general manager of Optos North America. “Annual comprehensive eye exams that include a thorough retinal evaluation are crucial for children of all ages because sight threatening and systemic conditions can potentially affect children’s educational performance and social development. We hope this program will help even small children take interest in their eye care and encourage parents to schedule regular eye care exams.”

In addition, all active AOA members and students recently received a complimentary copy of the activity book through a generous grant from Optos®.

Materials can be purchased through the AOA Order Department. The live action video is available on VHS (Item # WE-V), or DVD (Item # WE-D); the cost is $20 each. The activity books (Item #WE-1) are available in quantities of 25 ($30), 50 ($40), 75 ($48), and 100 ($55). Prices quoted are for AOA Members.
